Chen Yifei’s nostalgic visions of Shanghainese beauties, Tibetan daily life and ancient Chinese water towns became a symbol of cultural exchange as China opened up to the world from the 1980s to the 2000s, beguiling audiences from the East to the West. He was among the first artists from the People’s Republic of China to study in the United States, and sign with a major Western contemporary art gallery, establishing a trailblazing, lauded career both as a painter and a filmmaker.
